Lombokiss - The mighty Mount Rinjani on Mount Rinjani is a huge volcano that looms over the island of Lombok. Climbing to the summit is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have in Indonesia. With an altitude of 3726 mdpl, Mount Rinjani is the second highest mountain in Indonesia. Climbing up may not be easy, but very valuable, and is widely regarded as one of the best scenery in the country.
Part of this mountain 'circle of fire' also has a spiritual significance for the locals. It is thought that the name Rinjani comes from the ancient Javanese term for 'God'.
Around the slopes of Rinjani there is a lush forest sprinkled with waterfalls and surrounded by stunning scenery.
Inside the mountain is a crescent-shaped lake, the stunning Segara Anak which is about 6 km at its widest point. This sulfur lake is located 600 meters below the lip of the crater. Rise from the waters of this lake is a new volcano, Mt. New, which was the result of a series of eruptions during the 1990s. Segara Anak is a spiritual place. The Balinese come here every year and perform a ceremony called pekelan where the jewelry is placed on the lake as an offering for the mountain spirit. The Wetu Telu people also thought the lake was sacred and came here to pray on a full moon night.
Mount Rinjani is located inside the Gunung Rinjani National Park. The park covers 41,330 hectares and is within the bio-geographic transition zone (Wallacea). This is where the tropical flora and fauna of Southeast Asia meets with Australasia. This National Park was established in 1997 and is one of more than 40 in all over Indonesia.
For visitors, the three-day Rinjani trip from Senaru to the crater lips, down to Crater Lake and then to Sembalun Lawang, is considered one of the best travels in Southeast Asia. The bolder Trekker might want to head to the top of the volcano. This is best achieved from Sembalun Lawang and takes four days, ending in Senaru.
To ensure that local people benefit from tourism revenues, Trek Rinjani is managed by partnership of National Park officials, the public and private sectors of the Lombok tourism industry and community representatives. The community runs a cooperative coordinating Trek at Rinjani Trek Center (RTC) in Senaru and Rinjani Information Center (RIC) in Sembalun Lawang.
Revenue from tourism activities and entry fees is used for conservation, management and assisting National Parks with the maintenance of the Rinjani Trek, thus ensuring its sustainability. This management model is unique in Indonesia and is considered an example of ecotourism best practice in Indonesia.
